Research project

Indigenous youth: Ethnicity, Class and Gender. The Case of Kichwa-Otavalos in Ecuadorian Highlands.

My research project is focused on the transformation processes in rural communities, which lead to gender, class and generational conflicts. It is being carried out in the Otavalo region, in the northern highlands of Ecuador, where ethnification  has been an adaptation strategy to these changes. This research explores  the intersections of gender, class and age in order to provide a different approach from frequently applied cultural perspectives focused on “indigenous identity”. The analysis on these intersections might leads us to a tangible explanation of the causes and consequences of migratory phenomena and generational and inter-ethnic conflicts that indigenous young people experience in their communities.
