Livestock-farming and agriculture as well as the cultivation
of quinoa and potatoes are important sources of income. Minerals like borax and salt can also be named as central resources in the region.
Preparations for the ritual dedicated to Pachamama on Easter Sunday. People will sacrifice salt, vegetables and water among others.
The Quechua-speaking population is gathering around a huge fireplace and subsequently the k'owa is going to be burnt. This ceremony is a way to thank for sufficient rain this year.
The women carry their children on their backs - the rate of infant mortality in this area is one of the highest in Bolivia.
Travelling in this region is quite exhausting. People often tell me that they feel isolated and slightly neglected.
For the tourists the sightseeing of the fascinating salt lake is especially challenging during this season because the water is still accumulating at the edges.
