Sub-project of Cologne: Negotiation of Citizenship and Belonging in Consideration of Social Categorisations

The construction processes of cultural differences as well as the negotiation of citizenship and belonging in Latin America are the central focus of the sub-projects of Cologne and Hanover in 2014-2016. The sub-project Cologne investigates the connections between differentiated citizenship and ethnicity. The analysis of interdependencies of social categorisations receives special attention, particularly with regard to ethnicity and class. The question is how differentiated citizenship in the form of differentiated rights in education reinforces (re)ethnicization and generates new forms of belonging and which kind of consequences this has in conflictive situations. Specifically, this is examined in the Conservation Unit Reserva Extrativistas Tapajos-Arapiuns in the Brazilian Amazon region.
Besides this research, the sub-project Cologne cooperates with the sub-project Bielefeld on the development of educational material for Global Education with contributions on Brazil and works together with the sub-project Hanover on the sensitisation of trainers for an anti-racist and postcolonial perspective on Global Education and Intercultural Coaching.
Moreover, increasing global entanglements make comparative perspectives regarding other regions of the world a further interesting focus of research. Existing contacts are used to achieve a more solid cooperation with researchers who work on issues in the context of Africa at the participating Universities of Cologne and Hanover.
In 2010-2014 the sub-project Cologne investigated the interdependencies of social categorisations, such as ethnicity, class, gender, religion, age, place of origin etc. as mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion and their everyday consequences. Moreover, it has been tested if and how concepts of citizenship and belonging can be used to analyse the multi-layered inclusions and exclusions.
